Norwich High School was opened in 1875 and draws its pupils in almost equal numbers from the City of Norwich, the County of Norfolk, and the north of Suffolk. It stands in about 12 acres of grounds on the main Newmarket Road, a mile and a half from the city centre.
In addition to the main buildings, which are attached to a very distinguished Regency house there are three other houses, comprising a Sixth Form Centre, music school and Junior Department, a spacious gymnasium and a covered and heated swimming pool. All the playing fields are around the school, and a wide range of indoor and outdoor physical activities are offered, including badminton, gymnastics, dance, lacrosse and rowing.
Curriculum: The regular school course includes a wide range of academic and practical subjects. 22 subject options are available at A Level and the majority of girls in the Sixth Form go on to some form of higher education. The GCSE examinations taken are those of the MEG Board.
The School has a strong musical tradition, supporting three orchestras, ensembles, choirs and a Sixth Form madrigal group. Drama is also an important part of the school life and a variety of productions is encouraged at all levels. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is well established and over 94 girls have achieved their Gold Award in the last six years. Clubs and Societies flourish as lunch time and after school activities. The Debating Society, Photography Club, Design Technology Club and Young Investigators' Award are currently extremely popular. Field work and educational visits are arranged as appropriate. There is a flourishing Norwich High School Association.
Alumni - Former pupils include the author Pat Barr, the composer Diana Burrell, the singer Jane Manning, Judge Plumstead and Jenny Lane (BBC announcer).
The Norwich High School Old Girls' Association was founded in 1891. There is an annual newsletter and bi-annual gatherings are held in school, usually a meeting in November and a dinner in July. The Association also endows an annual Mathematics prize. There are currently just under 1000 members, and the options are life or annual membership.
